Zion Harrison

I didn’t think I had any more tears to cry. The night I learned Zavion was brain dead, I barely left his side to eat or sleep. Rasheed had been up here as often as I had been, but Fatima hadn’t. I didn’t know whether it was guilt or the fact that she was evading the police but, whatever the reason, it had her MIA.

“Zion, you need to eat. You want me to go to the cafeteria and grab a sandwich or something?” Rasheed suggested.

I shook my head because I didn’t have an appetite. Rasheed frowned at me and said, “You’re not going to last long if you don’t eat something, Zion.”

“Rasheed, I don’t want to eat. How am I supposed to keep food down when my baby is dead?!” I screamed.

Tears rolled down my face. It felt like my chest was caving in and I was overwhelmed by grief and guilt. Rasheed tried to console me, but I didn’t want to be consoled.

“Just go and get the sandwich,” I told him, needing time alone with Zavion.

He hesitated for a moment, but he got up and walked out of the room. I watched him as he went, still crying softly to myself. I hugged Zavion’s body and talked to him for a few minutes, telling him how much I loved him and how sorry I was for failing him. I was supposed to keep him safe, and I didn’t.

My phone vibrated with a text message from my co-worker, apologizing for telling Brenda where I was.

There was so much going on that day it completely slipped my mind that I told her where I was and what was going on with Zavion. As soon as I saw the message, I rolled my eyes and turned off my phone completely.

Rasheed came back a while later with a turkey sandwich that I tried to eat but couldn’t. He looked at me in concern and I put my sandwich down with a sigh.

“I’m sorry I blew up at you; you ain’t deserve that. You’re the only one who’s been here for me these past few days,” I replied regretfully.

Wiping away tears, I admitted I had money set aside for a rainy day. “It’s at the house. It’s not much, but it’s enough for a funeral. Make sure he’s buried properly, even if I can’t be there to see it.”

I told him all about the fraud checks. I felt like I was backed into a corner once Brenda came to see me. Feeling my heart sink, I choked up. Losing a child was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life; I felt like I wanted to die and be buried right beside him. My chest felt so heavy that I could barely breathe.

“You really think she’ll still send the police after you? Knowing Zavion’s on his deathbed,” he asked like he had doubts, but I didn’t.

“Yeah. She said she was, and I believe her,” I answered. I heard the disappointment in her tone.
